Dark

I love time travel dramas.  I gave The Time Traveler’s Wife four stars on Goodreads.  I saw the movie Somewhere in Time about twenty times when I was in high school.  I like stories about alternate realities.  4 3 2 1 by Paul Auster is one of the best books I have read.  It’s no surprise that I love the Netflix series Dark.

This three-season drama takes place in the German town of Winden in 2019.  It does not take long before we start our journey through time with our hero Jonas and drop into the past and future lives of the characters.  It is a mysterious, confusing, exhilarating and bittersweet trip for the viewer and completely worth your time and effort.

The La Canada Potato Famine

My plants are social distancing.  I had to separate them to stop the spread of Early Blight.  My potato plants, tomato plants and green beans had been thriving.  I noticed a few brown spots on the potato leaves one day, and the next day my garden was a total wipe …

Dog Habits

I should be more like my dog Elsie.  She is friendly, mostly eager to please and always up for a walk.  I love that about her.  She always greets me with joy and comes running when I jiggle the leash.  She never allows a rationalization to divert her from predictable …

Outside

I planted a garden last month at the beginning of the pandemic.  Swiss chard, carrots, radish, beets, squash, green beans and potatoes planted from seed.  Every day I go outside with my notebook and look for progress.  In the early days, my little patch was deluged with rain and deprived …

The German House

This book will stay with me for awhile. Eva is a young translator working for the prosecution in a trial of Nazi war criminals. She must come to terms with her country’s wicked past and learn about her parents’ lives during the war. And negotiate a difficult love affair.

The Chestnut Man

From the writer/creator of the original series from Denmark The Killing. This Copenhagen mystery has the usual flawed detectives, red herrings, tropes and utter darkness of the human spirit. Totally enjoyable.

Ohio

I’m having a love affair with the state of Ohio.  Whenever socially appropriate I’ll tell friends about its rolling green hills, or about Cleveland’s beautiful public auditorium and grassy mall.  Friends politely listen to me ramble, baffled and amused, and then we move on to other topics.  My husband thinks …

The Misery Cup

In the absence of the usual sports entertainment during the pandemic, I think I will create a new competition.  I’m calling it The Misery Cup.  I will compete for the trophy, because I believe I am a shoo-in for the win.  But I don’t want to discourage anyone from entering …
